What is too much happy and how do you handle it?

June 14, 2013When I used to teach aerobic exercise in the 80’s, every once in a while I would have a dream about being an instructor. In the dream there would be scores of people waiting for me to get their workout started, but I couldn’t get my boom box to work, or put my sneaks on, or find the right tape (in ’84 we made exercise tapes – it was fun).

Well, I think WW lecturers might have the same experience every now and then. A worst case scenario might be a situation in which someone shows up to tell you that your time is up for the use of the room. It wouldn’t matter that it was only the beginning of a great discussion about power foods. It wouldn’t matter if the room were filled with women waiting to be inspired to make it through another week. We were the kind souls who stood in line, endured the humiliation of stepping on the scale in front of others, and stayed because we were looking for something else, something more (our weekly lecture). Well my friends, “more” is not what we got, because that was no dream, it really happened at my local Weight Watcher meeting. Judging by the look on our leader’s face, it was her worst nightmare coming to pass.

If I had been able to ask anything at my weekly WW meeting, it would have been, “how do others handle too much happy?” What’s too much happy, you ask? Too much happy is when you find yourself in one situation after another, where the poor food choices are many, the gatherings with family never-ending, and your chances of staying within your points target are nil. From Passover to birthdays, Mother’s Day to Father’s Day, from Graduation Day to July 4th, and all the spring/summer happenings in-between – it’s just no fun for someone who’s one true goal in life is to go from a size 12 to an eight (and a triple D to… well you know what I mean).

How can you lose weight in a weekend filled with so much joy? How do you handle back to back parties? What are some strategies to stay safe and legal and still have a good time?
